Connecting Healthcare Providers to Patients - Buck Mower

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Redapple is a digital platform for patients to find private practice healthcare providers, connect with them, and maintain communication. The providers are our clients as they pay a subscription to use the telehealth tools we provide (messaging, scheduling, video conference, etc.). It's a freemium service, so it's free for providers to create an account and list a profile. It's always free for patients. It's a web-based application as well as (soon) mobile native apps for iOS and Android.

Tell us about yourself

I'm the CTO. I took my experience at companies like TurboTax and WebMD and applied it to Redapple. Processes like agile development and scrum teams weren't yet instituted when I came on board. On a personal note, I am an advocate for mental illness destigmatization. People are often hesitant to see a therapist or psychiatrist for various reasons. If we can lower the barrier to access, then I think we're doing something vitally important.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It feels pretty good to lead a team of developers that built a product - basically from scratch - that is generating revenue. Of course, in the development world, we all stand on the shoulders of giants and rely heavily on the work of others. So I don't take all that much credit. We got lucky to get some very talented developers on our team as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Living lean while working toward profitability.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's still all about people in the sense that the team is of utmost importance and also that the product exists to serve people.
  2. In software, release often and release early. There's no need to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It's all about continuous iteration and delivery. To go along with that, build the skateboard, then the bike, and the car. They're all functional if your mission is to get across town.
  3. Be quick to admit what you don't know and be as honest and transparent as possible, including with yourself.
