Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Markellos Diorinos, Co-Founder and CEO of Bryq, located in St. Petersburg, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bryq is a talent intelligence solution that is changing the way we work. Our science transforms the HR decision-making process when it comes to hiring, growing, and retaining the best talent possible. By assessing cognitive skills and personality traits, we combine psychometrics with existing objective company data to help companies make the most of their talent and easily find the gems within their talent pool.

Our customers are larger enterprises, typically over 1,000 employees. They face the usual HR challenges in hiring and managing their talent, and Bryq provides them with unique data-driven answers to their problems, leading to a direct positive impact on their bottom line. To support the startup ecosystem, we offer a version of Bryq for startups, limited to hiring only, for a price every startup can afford.

Tell us about yourself

The idea of Bryq came about when the founders and I were working on a separate project together. We were trying to make our own hires and were dismayed at looking at candidate after candidate who was wrong for the role - there should be a better way to select people, and resumes were clearly not helping. We learned that there is a science that can predict job fit, but we couldn’t find a tool that was able to leverage this science into a product that easily provided this to businesses. So we asked ourselves, “what if we could create a universally applicable platform to any business or industry?” That was when the idea of what Bryq has become now was born.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building a great team. The team at Bryq is like no other I’ve ever created before. We are working together to make the world a better place. Our teams win together and lose together. Bryq has built a team that is more than just the sum of their parts. Each team member plays a role in building Bryq’s culture.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging things about being a business owner is admitting when you’ve got it wrong. Our society puts leaders on a pedestal as people who are always supposed to get it right and have all the answers. Good leaders are usually right, but occasionally they make a wrong decision. They must be humble enough to admit that they made a mistake and take accountability for it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take risks in order to achieve greatness.
  2. Lead by example.
  3. Embrace your own vision and values.
