Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bryan Driscoll, Freelance Legal Copywriter and Content Writer, located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate Bryan J Driscoll JD LLC. As a lawyer, HR consultant, and legal writer with almost two decades of experience, my clients range in size and industry. I help businesses navigate the complexities of employment laws and create a more employee-centric workplace. I also use my knowledge of the law to educate others through writing, covering a wide range of legal topics for publications such as Forbes, LegalZoom, and the American Bar Association. With my expertise and dedication to helping others, I have established myself as a valuable resource in the business, employment law, and legal fields.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a passion for the written word. That's where it started for me. Way back in the day when law firm websites were first popping up, I took over the writing of my firm's website content and blog. I found I enjoyed that more than the practice of law, and that's how I branched out. During my time with that law firm, I also managed the day-to-day operations and, specifically, HR. Similarly, I found I enjoyed this immensely, and that's how I started with my two areas of focus for my business, that's now been in operation for over a decade.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business. So many businesses fail, and being able to be successful for over a decade now is a big personal accomplishment. Daily, I find extreme satisfaction in helping my clients create better workplaces and provide better content.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the constant need to balance competing priorities and make difficult decisions. As a business owner, you are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the business, from financial management and strategy to operations and client satisfaction. This can be challenging, as you must constantly make decisions that consider the short and long-term implications for the business while also ensuring client work gets done accurately, on time, and on budget. You must navigate the changing landscape of the business world and adapt to new challenges and opportunities as they arise. This can be a lot of pressure, and it requires a high level of focus, dedication, and resilience to be successful as a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait for a business plan. This goes against conventional wisdom, but, in my experience, I waited too long to start. I wanted to have everything in place, ensure I had enough clients to support myself, and have a clear strategy for how to stay afloat and grow. I didn't need all that to get started. Trust yourself and your instincts.
  2. Be prepared for challenges and setbacks. Starting and running a business is not always smooth sailing. There will be challenges and setbacks along the way, and it's important to be prepared for them. This means being resilient and adaptable and having a plan in place to overcome any obstacles that may arise.
  3. Invest in yourself and your team. As a business owner, your most valuable asset is yourself and your team. Investing in your own education and training, as well as the education and training of your team, will help ensure that you have the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. Treat yourself and your team like humans, not machines. Give extra benefits, be compassionate, and trust yourself and your team to do the work you hired them to do.
