Jewellery as Unique as You Are - Bruce Trick Custom Jewellery
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewellery but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bruce Trick, founder of Bruce Trick Custom Jewellery, located in Dartmouth, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My clients are connoisseurs of precious moments who want me to make a piece of jewellery in memory of a special time in their lives. It may be a piece that commemorates an event or a passing. It is often a unique piece of jewellery that expresses who they are. Something that has been derived after having in-depth conversations with myself.
Tell us about yourself
I started making pens in Manitoba, where I am from originally. I hit a cap on what I was creating and wanted to learn how to make more beautiful things, so I went to school for my second degree in Goldsmithing in Ontario. Everything took off from there!
My motivation comes from the people I help. I see the joy in their faces and the memories they now get to hold onto, and it moves me on a personal level. My inspirations initially come from Art Nouveau and Japanese art, but each piece is designed with that one person in mind. So that means I need to know more about them and get to know them. I'm so blessed to have had so many amazing clients; it really goes to show how wonderful people are when you hear their stories.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my largest accomplishment has been simply taking the initial step to run this business. It's not just for me; it's for my family as well.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing is having so many hats. I do everything from my own marketing and web design to accounting. It's all a huge learning curve for someone who just wants to be creative. haha
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Start. That's number one. Whatever it is you want to do, just do it! Do it on your off time, on your own, but just start. My second tip would be to (and you will) make mistakes. You're going to make them, so just know that and be OK with it. Mistakes are great because they provide learning opportunities. So the last tip would be to stick with it and stay positive. Consistency is key; as long as you make mistakes, learn, and try again, you will succeed!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I want people to know that even though it may only be you in your business (like myself), there is support out there. Use them. I'm not only talking about government support or small business loans etc., I'm talking about family and friends. The support of the people around you helps you to continue because, in the end, it's them who you are doing all for, isn't it?
