Harness the Creativity & Interests - Brooklyn Speech Therapy
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taylor D'Aries, Founder of Brooklyn Speech Therapy, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Brooklyn Speech Therapy supports families and their children through challenges with communication development. We provide direct therapy to children of all ages and train caregivers in the best ways to foster their child's speech, language, social and executive skills. Our customers are concerned and loving parents who are seeking guidance, but also their young children who simply enjoy us as "playmates."
Tell us about yourself
I began my career in pediatric head injury and stroke rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center, but I first embraced my entrepreneurial spirit with a move to New Delhi, India, in 2014. There, I developed a speech therapy practice and helped to start up one of the first early intervention centers in India. I've always been an independent person, and I value the ability to provide creative, high-standard clinical care on my terms. However, it is difficult doing everything on your own! Tired from that struggle, my return back to the U.S. came with a desire to return to work within a larger system. Such intentions were upended by COVID. Without another option, I responded to that nudge from the universe and founded BK Speech in 2020. While it is certainly a challenge, I am incredibly motivated by connecting with other professionals in the community, watching my business grow, seeing my clients happily learning, and creating my own work-life balance.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting over my fear of social media (still a work in progress) and hiring my first independent contractor.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
In my industry specifically, it is the delicate balance of monetizing work with little humans and families who are often in a place of vulnerability. As a woman, learning to fully stand in the value of my skillset and set boundaries has been a point of evolution. Also: TAXES.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know and honor your own boundaries.
- Seek support from family, friends, and your fellow professionals.
- Practice a ton of self-care and go at your own pace.
