What's your business, and who are your customers?

The name of my business is Interview Ally, and I support job seekers facing job and career transitions with a specific focus on resume writing, interview coaching, and general job search services.

Tell us about yourself

The reasons and inspiration behind starting Interview Ally are two-fold. I was laid off during the 2009 recession, and it upended my life. I spent several months applying for jobs, interviewing, and generally navigating what a very lonely, defeating, and scary time was. I wish I had reached out to someone who could help me get back on my feet – someone to provide support and encouragement.

The experience of being laid off and having to start over – coupled with my employment in a variety of positions and industries (most recently serving as an executive recruiter), eventually propelled me to open a business for being an advocate and ally for job seekers.

I have sat on both sides of the table as an interviewer and interviewee, and I leverage my skills and experience to help job seekers move through their job searches with clarity and confidence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There is not one big accomplishment that stands out – rather, it is more like a collection of accomplishments, big and small, that I have earned along the way. One experience that comes to mind is when I worked with a client who was out of work and looking to change careers. She was in a tough space emotionally and mentally when she reached out to me, but that changed the more we worked together. She interviewed for a position she was really excited about, and after several rounds of interviews, she was extended an offer. Feelings of fear and uncertainty evolved into hope and confidence. It was gratifying and inspiring to see her undergo a positive transformation.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a small business owner is navigating the emotional ups and downs. Whether you are dealing with self-doubt, fear of failure, or receiving rejection upon rejection... I have learned that how we respond to setbacks is key.

We can allow them to get in our way and slow (or even stop) our progress, or we can use them as a catalyst for growth. Although it is easier said than done, it is important to maintain a mindset that keeps you moving toward your goals and dreams.

I try to reflect on joyous times to get through bumps in the road. For example, I'll remind myself when a former client referred me or when a client told me how much I helped them. Reflecting on the things I have accomplished helps to move through the hard times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Spend time each day working on your business, even if it's just 10 minutes. Progress is progress. It is easy to get overwhelmed by all the things you may need or want to accomplish in the beginning. Break your goals down into smaller, manageable steps. I love keeping a list and then crossing off items as I complete them. This allows me to stop and appreciate the progress I've made, and it motivates me to continue moving forward.
  2. Don't listen to the naysayers. There will be one – or maybe even more – so I would say the best thing you can do is to prepare yourself mentally for when your path crosses with one. I had an interaction with a gentleman who told me there was no market for my business and that he would have discouraged me from launching if he had met me months earlier. I was shocked and disheartened by his harsh words, but I used what he said as momentum to work even harder on my goals and dreams, and I'm happy I did.
  3. I find it helpful always to remember my 'why' – my reason(s) for starting my business. Whatever it is, remind yourself of this often, as it will keep you grounded and focused on your goals and dreams.
