Balancing Birth to Baby - Bronwyn Addico

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey with health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bronwyn Addico, owner of Balancing Birth to Baby, located in Waterloo, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Balancing Birth to Baby offers childbirth and parenting education and support. We offer the widest variety of classes in our area, taught by a team of certified Doulas and Registered Labour & Delivery Nurses. We also offer Doula support for birth and the immediate postpartum period. Expectant families appreciate that we share our knowledge and wisdom along with evidence-based information to help them make the best-informed decisions for their journey. Our support has made all the difference in our client's ability to give birth, breastfeed, and bond with their new baby.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up with parents who were entrepreneurs, so running my own show comes naturally to me. Since having my own kids, I was inspired by my birth experience and wanted to help other families. I realized that the emotional support that new families need is often missing from care providers and wanted to fill that gap. This inspires me every day to keep building my business and supporting as many people as we can. We are now a team of 10 staff, teaching and helping families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There are many: every 5-star google review, being a reader's choice pick in our local paper, being contracted to teach for a local midwifery clinic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hours! Love what I do, but I definitely give it my all, all day long, and that often includes long nights.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's worth it to take the time to do a business plan, especially the financial calculations. Go over them again and again and use them as a guide in your first few years.
  2. Often, our business needs us sooner than we are ready to take the leap. Take the leap anyways. In my experience, it has always paid off and then some within a few months.
  3. Make sure that you love what you do to make the hours of being a business owner worth it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Birth is a completely transformative experience. It is deeply powerful and also deeply vulnerable. Our goal is to help families during this transformation. After a while, they process their experience and adjust to life as a new family.
