Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brock Novak and Kristina De Los Reyes, owners of Kevlar Performance & Rehab, located in Burlington, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are both chiropractors, but we don't consider ourselves "typical" chiropractors. We run a clinic with a gym to help people out of pain and into optimal performance. I'd say our main goal is to bridge the gap between rehab and performance. As a result, our clients tend to be people who are looking for more than the standard "adjustment." Our patients are looking to maximize their health potential.

Tell us about yourself

Well, for myself (Brock), I grew up in a family of small business owners. My parents, brother, and sister all owned businesses before me, and a part of me always knew that I would as well. I am extremely passionate about what I do, and I love working with patients and seeing them better themselves. I wanted to be able to create exactly the environment to do this in, which was, in my opinion, the best way possible.

And for me (Kristina), I actually did not grow up with an entrepreneur mindset. I was raised with going to school, working hard, and getting hired. There's nothing wrong with that, but along the way, I realized that course is just not for me. I'd rather do my own thing and set my own limitations and boundaries. Further, meeting Brock further perpetuated that idea, and here we are!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of the things that we are proudest of is creating our own salary and being able to provide a salary for the other therapists and employees in the clinic. It feels amazing to be able to create this for other people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For us, acknowledging that growth doesn't happen overnight. Long-term goals will require long-term solutions. Quick transactions and immediate gratification are great, but we are in it for the long game. Thinking about our business 5, 10, or 20 years from now excites us. This outlook allows us to really cherish the people who value what we provide them and the genuine relationships that we are able to have with people. Further, we definitely come across people who don't understand that work is our life and life is our work. But that is ok!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You are always going to have doubts about what you do. Everyone is going to seem like they are doing better than you. Wake up and recognize that you are further than you were yesterday. Have gratitude, purpose, and surround yourself with people who make that easy.
  2. Be receptive. You are going to challenge your previously learned knowledge along the way. You will meet people who will give you opposite opinions. Be open to receiving them; some things you may take away, others you won't. But opening your mind to new thoughts can only lead to further growth.
  3. If you are thinking about it, just do it. Sure, it's not easy, you can build wealth from working at a well-paying job with less stress, but there will always be a ceiling. With your own business, the only limitation is the ones you place on yourself. Growth may be slow but is limitless.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner is the best thing that has ever happened to us. But ultimately, this would not have been possible without our family, friends, and patients! Additionally, we've encountered people throughout the school who inspire us every day. This is our business, but this is not just us. This is a community that we've built and, hopefully, continue to grow!
