Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittney Smith, Founder of 88th & Oliver Publishing, located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a book coaching and editing firm, and I help people get their books out of their heads and into the hands of those meant to read them. My typical customer is a leader and expert in their field (most times a business owner) who wants to use their book to gain exposure and take their business to the next level.

Tell us about yourself

I've been doing this work for almost ten years. It started as a hobby after I wrote my first book, so many people asked me how to help them write a book. Now I do it as my full-time job, and I absolutely love it. Even if books are used as marketing tools, the information inside of them can still be life-changing. I'm motivated every day knowing that I'm making a difference in someone's life by helping them achieve a goal they have probably had for a while--especially knowing that the book they are writing will positively impact someone else's life!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I recently became a #1 bestseller on Amazon with my book "30 Days to Embracing Singleness." That's a big deal in my world because it says so much about who I am as an author and what I can help my clients accomplish as I coach them through writing bestsellers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things would be tough conversations when things are going as planned due to someone else slacking. I still have them, but they can be difficult because you never know how the other person will receive it, regardless of how gentle you may be. Plus, there is always this little voice in the back of my head that wants to people please, and business owners can't worry about people pleasing. You have to show up and do the good, easy, and hard work regardless of what other people think.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay consistent. The road will not always be paved with smooth bricks and lined with flowers, but if you keep at it, you will reach (surpass) your goals.
  2. Have a plan. Every day you need to know what you are doing to generate leads or bring in money. You shouldn't be leaving the day up to chance and just seeing what happens. Be intentional about how you move.
  3. Get support. You can spend a bunch of hours looking up how to do something, or you can get someone to teach you how to do what you don't know OR do what you don't want to do. Use your time wisely. Remember, the more time you spend trying to figure something out, the less time you spend making yourself visible to your buyers.
