Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Paul, Founder of Brittany Paul Photography, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a brand and commercial photographer based in San Antonio, Texas. My team and I create content for companies that desire to impact the health, wellness, and happiness of women. We will plan, design, and create purposeful images that speak to our client's brand. Whether you need updated lifestyle images or product photos, we've got you covered!
Tell us about yourself
I am a mom of two little boys, and I am married to my best friend. After spending five years in Education, I set my heart on being a stay-at-home mom, creating my own schedule, and photographing others. Now, I partner with business owners to build their brand identity. I'm drawn to clean backgrounds that tell a brand's story and showcase what makes them unique.
My family and friends motivate me. I want to be able to create my own schedule so I can make the school events or nap time readings (this is our stage right now). It was important for me to put them first during these years in our life. My close friendships are everything. They encourage and support me during the highs and lows of life and business. These women help fuel my confidence to tackle my big dreams!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been growing my team. Most of the time, I work with a creative producer and a hair and makeup artist. I love to work with others. I have been on a team since I was in little tots soccer. I believe that I can learn from anyone willing to share.
The team I work with has so much knowledge. It is so exciting, and I can't wait to see what we build together. I not only want to support my family, but I also want to grow a business that enables others to do the same, all while doing what they love.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The comparison game has been a challenge for me. There are so many photographers out there that, at times, I can fall into the reality vs. IG trap. I have learned to overcome this by reaching out to them and inviting them to a coffee or a Babes Support Babes event. By meeting them in person or just simply reaching out, these acts have helped me see them as allies and not competitors.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Write down your crazy big dreams! Choose one to focus on. Then write down a list of tasks that have to happen to move toward it.
- Get a separate bank account to track all things for your business, even if it is a separate personal account. Knowing the numbers is huge to growing and understanding when you can invest.
- Invest in yourself and your business, whether it is an online education, a community, or a hardback book. Learning and growing are so important as a business owner.
