Glam & Travel - Brittany Hill Makeup Artist
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Hill, Founder of Brittany Hill Makeup Artist, located in Little Rock, AR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a professional freelance makeup artist that specializes in glam makeup. My main client base are brides and those who just typically tend to lean and love the more bold glams that I have to offer!
Tell us about yourself
I come from a small town called Mayflower, Arkansas, which is where I first started my craft. It mainly started in 2014. I had really always been into makeup, just never on other people! I was always creating so many different and unique makeup looks on myself back in the day that my friends kinda pushed me to start to do theirs! I won’t lie; it was a little rough in the beginning ‘lol’; I had to sit on top of my friends on my bed so I could get a “better angle.” But the more they made me practice with them, the more comfortable I got, and I was able to finally move to do their makeup in a chair! It was so exciting when I finally got the hang of it. After practicing for about a year, I started getting more locals interested in the craft that I had to offer! Of course, this got me excited, and while I worked two different jobs, I didn’t quit this amazing side hustle I had, which would soon become a hugely successful business in the long run! What motivates me is that people continue to come and put their trust in me for any events or special days that they have in their life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner will probably be changing the beauty standards when it comes to being in the beauty industry. I battle with self-confidence daily, and I’m an advocate for self-love and being comfortable in the skin you’re in. I feel that professionalism doesn’t depend on how you look— whether you’re not wearing makeup, if you don’t have your hair done, or even your nails done. It’s about how you treat your customers or everyday people that you come by. I feel it’s based on how you run your business and how you handle situations. I have proven time and time again that it doesn’t matter how a person appears; how they appear does not affect the outcome of their work. With that being said, I am beyond confident in my craft, and I continue to gain confidence in the art that I produce. I am learning and growing by the day, and the words “you’ll never make it in the industry looking the way that you do every day” has inspired me and motivated me to become a face in the industry, and not just any face, but a bare, beautiful, and confident face that believes in herself and her work. Building up to the woman and business owner that I am today because of those words has by far been the biggest accomplishment I have ever made during this career.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balance. Balance is actually insanely hard, and I’m currently still trying to figure it out. Finding it between physically working, handling messages from email to socials, with a home/family life and time for friends has been the most difficult thing ever since going full time. I will say it has gotten easier as I’ve gone along, but there are definitely still days that work is completely wrapped around my finger! It’s all worth it, though; meeting different people and then making more friends and being able to provide for my family is essentially such an amazing feeling!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start!!! You have to start somewhere, take that leap of faith, and just go for it. I promise that you won’t regret it!
- Plan your weeks, utilize apps and organize accordingly! Business can take over easily, but honestly, booking sites, websites, etc., can help so much in the long run. Utilize and take advantage of those resources!
- Marketing. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Even if that’s not getting shares, likes, or not getting the outcome you were expecting. Don’t let these things discourage you; I promise people to see you and your work; building your business takes time.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Even though there are hardships when it comes to being a small business owner, especially in the beauty industry, it is probably the best and most freeing feeling ever. Being able to make your own schedule is the biggest perk, along with making new and incredibly supportive friends that are also in the industry! Be confident in yourself and your craft(s), and you will thrive!
