Hugs in a jar - The Garden Fairy Fife
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with wedding florist and designer, Aileen Robbie founder at The Garden Fairy Fife, located in the UK.
Tell us about yourself and your journey to where you are today...
I have always loved the outdoors and nature, geography was my favourite subject at school. I decided to study Environmental Management at University and worked in an office job as an environmental consultant after graduating. When my children came along I couldn't do the same job so decided to set up my own gardening business and set my hours to fit in with school times. I enjoyed the gardens with flowers and often arranged little jars and vases for clients. During lockdown 2020 I started to grow my own cut flowers from seeds and sold them locally in small jars as 'flower hugs'.. my flower journey has grown from there to bigger arrangements and even wedding flowers.
What motivates you each day?
The excitement of creating something beautiful even if it comes with hard work and earthy fingers!
What makes your flower business stand out?
I am known locally for my 'flower hugs in a jar' - little posies with a hand written message left on door steps to brighten people's day.
What do you believe has led to the success of your floristry business?
I think that taking pride in each little posie or hug and delivering it with a genuine smile has helped people relate to me and what I do. I craft each order with care and love and really want the recipients to be happy and love the flowers as much as I do!
What are the tactics you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?
I walk my beautiful labrador pup every morning in the countryside surrounding our house.. it gives me time to breathe and appreciate the beauty of nature and the changing of the seasons.. even on a rainy day there is something to discover when you are outside. I like to keep my floral style as seasonal as possible and appreciating the green shoots of spring or the warm tones of autumn always gives inspiration to that.
