Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in advertising services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert Brill, CEO of Brill Media, located in Lake Balboa, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Brill Media is a white-label media buying firm serving marketing and creative agencies. We support marketing firms that want to package together paid media with any creative, marketing, or social media services.

Tell us about yourself

I've been working in advertising for 20 years. My first job was before we called it social media. It was guerrilla marketing, posting in forums, building a persona, and telling people in the forums about new music. Along the years, I've been fortunate to work on big movie releases, video games, Fortune 5 brands, top financial firms, and well-known consumer packaged goods that people buy every day. Brill Media started in 2013 after I had worked for 10 years doing media buying for agencies. We work for our clients to turn ones and zeroes into dollars and cents. The job is big because so many parties depend on our work to grow predictably. Employees and business owners pin their expectations of future success on our firm. It's a solemn responsibility. The big "why" for me is the people I love and the work I love. I love my family, will continue to work for my family, and I love the work I do. Brill Media is my profession and passion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The awards and recognitions are certainly nice, but the most important accomplishment is our ability to thrive in a competitive and complex business environment. It's being able to provide for our people, give them benefits, provide quality of life, create work-life balance, and benefit from professional development.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The toughest elements are the situations where we must make tough decisions that no one is happy with but must be done. Running a business is about making a series of choices in quick succession with the best information you have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Mindset is everything. If you believe it's possible, you will find a way. Always look for inspiration from people and ideas that can keep your mindset positive. The rest will fall into place.
  2. Money is your lifeline. If you run out of money, it's game over, so be frugal with the money you spend until not spending the money costs you opportunities.
  3. Finally, surround yourself with the right people. Your network is your net worth.
