What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the photography business. Weddings, Fashion shoots, Portfolios, Headshots, and Events are the domains where I service my clients.

Tell us about yourself

It was a bright sunny morning in an otherwise usually foggy month of January in 1992 when I was a little boy; my grandfather came to me and said (in Hindi), "Puttarr yaadein bana. Yaadein budhaape ki laathi hoti hain", which meant- "Kiddo you should make memories. Memories are the support system in old age" while handing me a brown leather bag. The bag had his old Konika Minolta film camera. At that point in time, I didn't know how to use a camera or change film rolls. However, I was just too excited to even hold it and kept it hanging around my neck all day. It was at that moment that my love for photography sparked. My grandfather passed away a few weeks later, but even after 30 years, that morning scene is still fresh in my memories as if it happened yesterday. Creating images for me is a very satisfying feeling. And that's my daily motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every time my client smiles looking at the results or sends me thank you text sharing his/her happiness looking at the pictures; I am on Mt Everest.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Marketing myself digitally has been a challenge for me. Most of my business comes from word of mouth.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Anyone looking at starting a photography business should:

1. Only start this business if you love the craft. Money can be made in any business. But this business requires passion.
2. Treat every client as your biggest client and give them your best results.
3. Never shy away from learning. Every day is a school day in the world of photography.
