Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brigid Kombol, founder of B. A Kombol Massage Therapy, is located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work in the Health care sector as a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Since there is no age restriction for massage, I cater to all ages, mainly providing therapeutic treatments ranging from general wellness to various neuromuscular conditions to people from different walks of life.

Tell us about yourself

I graduated with a degree in Economics and went on to complete an MBA; I worked in the financial sector for a few years but still felt a void. An encounter with my grandma, who had dementia, gave me the green light to pursue my passion for being a massage therapist, and it has been a blessing. It's been effortless and fulfilling to the extent that I also teach massage therapy in college. Hearing the genuine gratitude, blessings, and encouraging words from my clients and students keeps me going and drives me to show up every day as a better version of myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It seemed surreal when I realized I was actually a business owner. A business that is fully owned and run by me. Due to the flexible nature of the business, I have been able to juggle raising 3 wonderful kids, one adult, and 2 teenagers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Laziness is not an option. You have to show up and be ready to give your best. Your treatment at 6.00pm should be as effective as the one at 10.00am. You can't have too much downtime as that can be costly for the business. Finding that balance can be a bit challenging, but it's a sacrifice that has to be made. However, when the business is big enough to employ trusted hands, it shouldn't be too demanding.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify the type of business; make sure it's what you love and will have time for.
  2. Show up with a good attitude and prepare for however the day turns out.
  3. Be patient. Some good things don't come easy.
