Designed for Your Everyday Lifestyle - Bridge Nine Candle Co.
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chelsea Arvesen, Founder of Bridge Nine Candle Co., located in Portland, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm in the business of creating scents! It's my job to bring scents into your space that bring back memories, set the mood, brighten your day or create seasonal joy. Our hand-poured soy candles are for the everyday lifestyle. More brass tacks, our main demographics are women (25-45) that enjoy everyday luxury.
Tell us about yourself
I've always been a creative person. I like to get my hands on something and try to create it before buying it. I first started making candles in 2009 when my favorite candle shop moved out of state. With their absence, I saw a niche that needed filling (as well as my own candle needs that needed to be met), so I started the research and development process in creating my candle formula, the same one I use today! After I created my formula I dove into the branding process because I knew I needed a strong brand presence to succeed. What motivates me each day? I love to create! It's really what drives me. The fact that something that I pour my heart into (pun intended) brings joy to others makes me so happy!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've had the opportunity to work with some amazing brands to create custom candles for them. I am very proud of two of which are Portland Trail Blazers and Adidas. Working with these brands and gaining brand recognition from these partnerships has been amazing.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think, especially in these last three years, one of the hardest things to do as a business owner is to continue to adjust and evolve with what's happening in the world, the market, the economy, etc. It's definitely been hard to keep up with everything and continue to pivot and start a new strategy constantly. Social media is ever-evolving; there are constant supply chain issues or new regulations (thanks, COVID) that keep throwing me for a loop when I feel like I have my feet firmly planted.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create a brand, not just a product. Anyone can make a product; you must have strong branding to stand out.
- Make/do something that you believe in. If you pour your heart into something, it shows to your customers.
- Set boundaries for yourself. Working for yourself sometimes (let's be honest, most times) means you work 24/7. Allow yourself some structured time off, or else you'll get burnt out.
