A Journey of Creative Self-Discovery - Brian Simons

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian Simons, a professional artist based in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional artist and painting instructor with works hanging in private and corporate collections in Canada, the US, Europe, and Australia. My customers range from people in their 20's to 70+, mostly middle-class people with a sprinkling of wealthy folk.

Tell us about yourself

I have always drawn and painted as far back as I can remember. I wanted to go to art school but was discouraged because, of course, you can never earn a living doing that. When I was 19, I became a member of the Baha'i World Community and found much inspiration in the Baha'i Writings on the arts. Baha'u'lla'h, the Prophet/Founder, had said: "The best of men are they that earn a livelihood by their calling." This haunted me for several years while I trained as a plant operator/engineer. At the age of 30 or so, I quit working as an engineer and started painting. I took several jobs over the years to supplement my painting income but have lived on the work for many since that time. What motivated me each day was the question of what I will paint today. Most of my work these days is from my imagination, so I have little idea ahead of time. Painting is my sanctuary, my solace, my joy, the journey to my own heart, and my haven from the rigours of life. It is a wonderful spiritual activity that draws one closer to his Creator.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is having taught and coached hundreds and hundreds, maybe thousands of people in acrylic painting workshops in several locations in Canada and also in the US. To see absolute beginners get the hang of it, learn to get out of the way, and accomplish great things in a short period of time brings me much joy.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As an artist/instructor, probably the most difficult thing is the business end of things and figuring out how to maintain a consistent income. My wife says I'm a wealthy man in denial, so maybe I'm in my own way more than I need to be.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do lots of experimenting, and don't get stuck in ruts. Consult with others.
  2. Learn to live without fear. It is not about you!
  3. Find a sanctuary within where you can frequent and derive inner joy, ideas, and energy.
