Coffee and Flowers - Brew + Bloom

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sam Pham, co-owner of Brew + Bloom, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a woman-owned business that opened during the pandemic. We've managed to become very successful despite these additional challenges. We have fresh-forward and innovative food and drinks, along with a beautiful ambiance, we host a variety of events that give back to the community, and we support local ourselves: our retail space is filled with local vendors. Some of them have also started their small businesses during the pandemic. Our customer base is mainly women of all ages, but we're a great location for business meetings, date nights, and Edmonton locals looking for a unique, floral cafe experience!

Tell us about yourself

Travelling inspires me. I was inspired to start Brew+ Bloom after visiting a floral cafe in Japan three years ago. What motivates me each day is the ability to create beautiful spaces for customers and being able to take people out of their everyday environment and place them into something spectacular, and for them to come together inside such an environment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Developing a good team is something every business owner should strive for because that's really what helps a business succeed. I'm proud to say we have a great team of individuals who are committed to helping Brew + Bloom grow.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Team development. Without a good team, you cannot run a good company. People help grow a company, so it's important to cultivate good relationships and experience for everyone involved––employees and customers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it now.
  2. Don't be afraid to fail because that's how you learn and grow.
  3. Experiment. It's a risk that could lead to a great reward. Trying more things actually minimizes risks. Not trying at all means you'll never know what will succeed and what will fail. You optimize your chances of success by trying multiple new things, even if you don't feel prepared.
