Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alannah Zilkowsky, Founder of Breeze Web Designs, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner and creator of three unique businesses that all flow together - RP Self Centre, Rock Paper Hair, and Breeze Web Designs. I've been a hairstylist for 15 years - 8 years ago, I became self-employed and opened up Rock Paper Hair, my hair studio, which is now located in RP Self Centre. I started RP Self Centre 4 years ago when I couldn't find a community of like-minded women in the beauty business to share space and operate Rock Paper Hair within - so I decided to create it! Today there are seven independent female beauty business owners operating within RP Self Centre. In February of 2022, I started Breeze Web Designs - an all-inclusive, hands-off web design specifically for hair salons and hairstylists. I wanted to be able to share my knowledge of how to establish a powerful, strategic online presence to grow a clientele and have a successful hair salon.
Tell us about yourself
I started working in a hair salon when I was 15 and got my Journeyman Red Seal Hairstyling license at 18. I was fortunate to know what I wanted to do for my career early in life. I love the hairdressing industry and am loving the new direction Breeze Web Design is taking me by helping to teach other stylists how to elevate their online presence.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In January of 2020, I volunteered in the Philippines with Hair Aid, an Australian charity, where I taught, alongside 20 other hairstylists from around the world, women basic haircutting skills so they could earn an income and support their families. It was a phenomenal, life-changing experience that I cant wait to do again!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having any sort of work-life balance and never being able to turn your brain off at night!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Do your market research - find a niche - put aside dedicated time to work ON your business behind the scenes (marketing, business planning, financial management, etc.), not just IN your business.
