Tell us about yourself

My purpose throughout my life has been to help others realize their potential. Today, as an executive coach and leadership advisor, I coach and develop leaders around the world to ensure they and their organizations achieve the results they dream of. I have been a CEO more than a few times. I discovered how to create cultures of performance, leadership & execution excellence - the secret to sustainable growth. In applying that culture, I grew a software company from $20mm to over $100+mm. I have had the good fortune to have sold two companies. My career has spanned more than three decades and all four time zones as I have inspired leadership in New York, Chicago, Phoenix, LA, and San Francisco.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is helping everyone around me see themselves as more capable and realize their infinite potential. I have seen people I have led go on to found companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars and advance in their careers in ways they could not imagine.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, the hardest thing is having to do everything...including things you may not be great at or things you just don't like. Running the business versus serving clients is always a conflict. Both are required. Once you start to get good at running the company, you hire people, and then you have to let go and trust others to do what you learned to do through struggle and trial. It's tough being a business owner. If you are successful, you will have to adapt and accept change.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand clearly what problem you are solving for your customer.
  2. Have a clear purpose (besides monetary) for our business. Why does it matter to the work and think big - why not?
  3. Find someone who will give you honest feedback. This is someone you trust but not someone who will protect you because they love you so much they don't want to hurt your feelings.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In a world that is constantly changing, it's hard to be confident and not react in fear. Your mindset will determine so much of your success. The problem will never be the problem, but the way you see the problem will be the problem. Seek perspectives different than your own.
