What's your business, and who are your customers?
Brava Financial is a flat-fee, advice-only financial planning firm based in San Diego, serving clients locally and nationally. My clients seek objective, fiduciary financial advice aligned with their aspirations and values.
Tell us about yourself
I am a thirty-year veteran of the financial services industry and have a passion for the work. Connecting and supporting financial planning clients is life-changing for them and me. Working for others provided incredible experience, but I have a vision for my business, my life, and the kind of work I want to do for clients. I needed more autonomy and creative space to operate. So, I decided to do it myself!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Other than a willingness to leap to start my own business, my most significant accomplishment to date is having clients ask for their invoices - I know I am doing the right thing for my clients when they are asking to pay me!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Total accountability. If the computer dies, it's on you. If a client needs help, it's on you. Payroll? On you. Taxes? On you. Before I started my business, I remember hearing multiple business owners say, "we never missed payroll." I thought, oh, gosh, that's nice. Now I understand what that means. It is a remarkable statement of commitment and accountability.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Go for it—it's scary, but way more thrilling and affirming. Worth it, hands down.
- Measure yourself against your goals, not against others. You define success.
- Ask for help. There are many resources and givers out there. People love to help others.
