Creating One-of-a-kind Portraits - Brandi Nicole Photo
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandi Nicole, Founder of Brandi Nicole Photo LLC, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an artist and portrait photographer based in Brooklyn, NY. I serve brands wishing to add a creative element to their advertising and private clients who wish to become the subject of my art.
Tell us about yourself
Since I was old enough to hold crayons and doodle on my bedroom walls
I have been an artist and creator in many mediums. In high school, I started taking clients from my classmates and teachers to capture portraits and wedding photography. Since then, I have put myself through photography school, moved to New York City, and dedicated my life and career to creating the work I dream of for my target clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making the move from part-time to full-time as a photographer was the biggest accomplishment I could have hoped for. Since then, being asked to create imagery for various brand launches and being given the freedom to develop photoshoots and concepts fully from the heart for income continues to be the number one thing I am most grateful for.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning self-discipline has been the hardest part of being my own boss. While wearing all the hats, it is imperative that I learned early on to stay accountable to myself and ensure the work that is less fun gets done too.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first would be to work on your consistent self-discipline; it is crucial to your business's success. Create small habits aligned with the person and business you would like to build - this will take you so far! The second would be to seek some sort of mentorship. Find someone doing what you would like to do and study them, ask to shadow or work for them, and ask them specific questions as they relate to you and the path you are on. And lastly, I cannot recommend enough to read or watch as much as you can about the subject and business side of the industry you want to go into; there are SO many amazing free resources on virtually every topic - and no reason you cannot be a well-read student of the topics of business and your desired industry.
