Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Knighten, Founder and Brand Consultant of Brand Curators, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a creative agency called Brand Curators; we're a hybrid communication and branding agency that also produces content and manages influencers/talent. We bring together emerging creators and forward-thinking brands to create inclusive, culturally relevant campaigns.
Tell us about yourself
I freelanced for years before I officially started my business, which gave me the opportunity to network with a wide range of entrepreneurs across industries. In 2020, there was a large focus on supporting small and minority-owned businesses, so I wanted to help these entrepreneurs seize the moment and increase their visibility. I worked with a few friends who were also passionate about elevating small businesses to create social media campaigns that put our favorite Black-owned brands in the spotlight. The success of these campaigns inspired me to turn my side hustle into a full-time business.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing and supporting my team. I'm proud of the people I've brought into my business. They've poured into me and helped make my dreams a reality, so I always make sure to pour into them in return by prioritizing their personal and professional goals.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about becoming a business owner is unlearning "traditional" corporate behaviors. You bring those skills and structures with you, but now there's a blank canvas to create your own environment. It can be difficult to allow yourself the grace to experiment a bit more, take risks, and make something that is your very own. Over time you start to get a groove and trust yourself more.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Create a network of mentor types to learn from, create a solid plan and intention for your business before you launch (it will change constantly, don't worry), and make an effort to learn outside of your industry.
