Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Colin Jackson, co-founder of BPM Health Coaching, located in London, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I make fitness simple for ladies over 30 who just want to feel strong, confident, and like themselves again- without dieting, counting calories, or endless workouts.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been interested in health and fitness- but my interest turned into a career when my dad passed away suddenly after struggling for years with his health. I immediately became aware of 2 things: the first, life is short, and we're not guaranteed tomorrow. And second, I have the freedom to choose how I want to live my life, so I want to help contribute positively to my community.

For some of my clients, improving their health and strength can spell the difference between a good quality of life and not. For other clients, improving their health can be literally choosing between life or death.
What keeps me going, believe it or not, isn't motivation. Motivation comes and goes, and it's totally normal for this ebb and flow to occur. What matters more than staying motivated is the skill set we have to stay consistent when motivation is low. This is something that I've come to realize in my business, and it helps when I teach this to my clients so that they themselves can be more consistent. Progress, not perfection!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business after almost ten years is a huge accomplishment for me! Of course, growing sales and revenue is nice as well. However (and I'm about to cringe here at this cliché I'm about to say), it really is helping my clients get great results (and stay that way) that makes me feel accomplished.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to let go of desired outcomes. As the saying goes, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face." Probably the most challenging thing is not to take failures personally rather have a Growth Mindset and learn from failures.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have an Abundance Mindset, not a Scarcity Mindset. Whatever service you want to provide, no matter how far on the fringes it may be, there is an abundance of people on those fringes who will resonate with you and will pay top dollar for what you can provide!
  2. Just get started, and let it be messy. If your stuff is full of spelling mistakes, bad grammar, or the platform is clunky, or whatever the case may be... you'll never succeed if you don't try. Embrace this motto "Something is better than nothing." Try to focus more on the process and how you will grow as a person and less on getting things perfect.
  3. Do a great job, and make sure everyone knows about it! (i.e., testimonials, referrals, etc.)
