Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kez Christie, co-owner, and general manager of Box N Burn, located in Santa Monica, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Box N Burn. We are a Boxing Fitness gym in Los Angeles. Inspiring our local community to Be stronger, healthier, and fitter both mentally and physically through Boxing Fitness.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been an athlete, loved fitness, and boxed competitively. Coaching and helping others has always just felt natural, so being in the fitness industry, in our niche of Boxing Fitness, was a dream come true path for me to follow.

Boxing really brings out people's self-esteem, confidence, and inner power. When they start noticing themselves getting fitter and stronger and finding their punch power, it's very rewarding to be able to coach people through that process.

People transform when they train. Physically yes, but more so, the confidence and how they carry themselves after a few sessions. It's such a rewarding career.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, being from a small town in Ireland, being able to live in Los Angeles and own a successful business is a massive accomplishment for me. I have two great business partners that have mentored me up to this position. Just being able to stand where I stand and mentor our trainers. Being respected in the industry is also a huge one for me. So when people have heard of me or our gym, I'll have a massive grin on my face.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Switching off 😂 There is always something to do, especially if you're hungry. It can be very hard to 1) want to take a day off. 2) if you do, sometimes things come up, and as an owner, you need to answer those calls if they're time-sensitive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the risk; the time is never right. That doesn't mean being reckless. It just means there is no right time, and it will be hard, but it's your business
    your baby!
  2. Ask Qs and always be open to learning from those who are in the position you want to be in! Read books, listen to podcasts, and hire a mentor!
  3. Get effective with time management
