What's your business, and who are your customers?
Bountiful Candles Co. specializes in handcrafting high-quality soy candles. The great thing about candles is that they're for anyone! Customers can treat themselves to a candle they can enjoy while relaxing at home or give them as gifts to their loved ones. We enjoy partnering with local businesses to host candle-making workshops as a way to bring the community together.
Tell us about yourself
I am a proud Latina, born and raised in Miami, FL. My mom and dad are both entrepreneurs and have been the driving force behind my entrepreneurial spirit. As a little girl, I would take unopened snacks from my fridge (like string cheese) and sell them to my neighbors or buy candy in bulk to sell around my school. I’ve dreamed about being a business owner since I can remember but couldn't decide on a type of business to pursue.
Over lockdown at the start of the pandemic, my mom taught me to pour candles as a way to unwind. That's when I found my passion for candle-making and realized this was my business. It's been a dream come true. Leaving my professional career to focus on building my business has also allowed me to create a healthy work/life balance and be fully present for my son. As a single parent, I wouldn't trade that for the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That's a tough question! There's so much to be proud of. I find so much joy in the little things that have happened in my journey, like ordering my first palette of jars or being asked to be a part of a giveaway. One thing that stands out is the success of my candle-making events; they're my newfound passion! These events help build our community and are something that everyone can enjoy. I love sharing my craft with my community!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying motivated and not becoming overwhelmed is my biggest challenge. As a business owner, you’re responsible for every single role that comes with running a company - marketing, accounting, manufacturing, customer service; you name it. I’m still learning how to manage my time in the most effective and efficient way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- In the beginning, you will see a lot of money coming out and not a lot coming in, but that will change, and it will get better! Hang in there, and don't be discouraged.
- Get your business out there! Signing up for as many events as I can manage has been the most effective way of engaging with potential customers and making connections.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need! Whether it's for a shared post or a partnership, the worst that can happen is that someone will say "no," and you'll just move on to the next person.
