Optimizing Online Presence Organically- Borealis Copywriting
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lorraine Dufour, Owner of Borealis Copywriting, located in Fredericton, NB. Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a copywriter for sustainable and eco-friendly Canadian brands focusing on helping small and medium-sized businesses with a passion for our planet and making it a better place.
Effective digital presence requires a lot of work, time, and strategy. I work with business owners and their teams to give them a customized approach that best suits their particular needs and their wants. Creating copy in my client’s brand voice that engages their audience and is also search engine optimized is critical to a successful online presence. It’s what I love doing, and it’s what I’m good at!
There’s no cookie-cutter approach that will work for all businesses, and I want to make sure that my clients are getting the right fit for their needs and their budget.
Sustainable and eco-friendly practices are so important right now, and I want to be able to support and encourage businesses that make this their mission. That's why I chose to write for them – to strengthen their digital presence so that they can focus more of their energy and time on building a greener world.
Tell us about yourself
After spending over two decades in the military, my heart told me that it was time for a change. So I decided to go take a completely different career path, and that was to become an entrepreneur in a field where I could exercise my creative side. That's how I found copywriting.
My family is extremely important to me, and becoming a solopreneur allows me to create a flexible work schedule. Being able to work from home, be there for my children when they need me, and create my own path in life is extremely rewarding, and it's also my daily motivation.
Supporting eco-friendly and cruelty-free brands and practices is important to me because I want my children to have as beautiful a world as possible to live in. For me, it’s the only way to go.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping others achieve their business goals, working with passionate people who share my values, and knowing that I'm giving my clients the best work that I can create for them. It feels good knowing that I help my clients create an effective online presence so that they can focus on the parts of their business that really light them up.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
In my business, I'm the owner, the CEO, the worker, and a solopreneur.
Sometimes that can get quite lonely. In the military, there was a well-defined structure to everything, and a lot of people around me with similar experiences. I knew what to do and when to do it. And if I didn't know what to do, there was always someone there to tell me.
When I started my own business, it took me a while to wrap my head around the fact that it was all me now. That I alone made all of the decisions and that I could choose what path to take. Sometimes that was scary, and sometimes that was liberating.
I also realized that I wasn’t really alone in my journey. I belong to an amazing community of copywriters, my family is here to support me, and I realized the importance of networking.
So really, you’re not alone! Lean into your support networks and put yourself out there. That is truly the way to go and to grow!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Seek out and accept support. Whether it's from family, an online community, a course, or a mentorship program. These are the people who want to see you succeed, and they will hold you up and help you along the way.
- Get out of your comfort zone. Push yourself beyond what you think you can or should do. When you challenge yourself and your perceived limits, you'll achieve more than you ever thought possible.
- Be consistent, persistent, and patient. Success comes with all of those things. When it feels hard, just keep going and give it your all, and with hard work and time, you will succeed.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Content doesn't have to be complicated. Write like you're having a conversation with a friend or a family member. Make it all about your reader and not about you. Tell stories, be helpful, provide value, and just be you! That is when you truly make a connection with your audience.
If creating content isn't your thing, or if you don't have the time and would rather focus on other things, I'd be happy to help you out. I'd love for you to get in touch with me through my website or any of the social networks listed below :)
