Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Frank Gianotti, CEO of Boomerang, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Boomerang is a complete health and wellness solution for at-home testing. We saw an opportunity to reinvent healthcare by moving patient-centric diagnostic tests into the comfort of consumers’ homes and providing users with an empowered path forward based on their results.

Our consumers are anyone looking to take control of their health and wellness journey. As many wait to visit the doctor until a medical scare arises, an individual’s decision to join Boomerang helps them and their loved ones become more informed patients, all while equipping them with the tools they need to proactively take the next step towards achieving their health goals. With that said, according to Forbes, women drive 70-80% of all consumer purchasing decisions. With this purchasing power in mind, Boomerang helps women – and their loved ones - be more proactive about their health goals.

Through state-of-the-art, at-home diagnostic testing that meet consumers’ ever-changing health needs, customizable wellness plans, and strategic partnerships, Boomerang is uniquely positioned to make better healthcare accessible to all while becoming a leader within the fast-growing billion-dollar digital health market.

Tell us about yourself

I started out in the television and entertainment space, working in all aspects, from acting to on-air animation and even creating a children’s show called the Rockamoles. When the COVID pandemic started, industry partners and I wanted to develop Boomerang, initially out of the need to keep people safe and healthy on television and movie sets to keep business going.

Boomerang was the colliding of two worlds, bringing what we knew from entertainment to the medical space and turning this vision into reality. Similar to our experience with television, we identified that Boomerang would need to be delivered with speed to match consumers’ ever-changing health needs, so we adopted that approach when building this company. Once we acquired our labs, we evolved the idea to build a brand that provides access to high-end at-home testing kits for a variety of health concerns that are top-of-mind for consumers – such as diabetes, common allergy testing, sexual health, and much more.

We set out to provide an excellent customer experience. We’ve found that consumers see value in having direct guidance at their fingertips and on their own terms when it comes to taking the next best step for their health and well-being, so we wanted to provide this throughout the Boomerang experience through easy-to-use and comprehensive digital technology. Boomerang will be launching an integrated mobile app that will offer practical next steps and more information about consumers’ wellness journeys after test results are received. We were motivated to provide the tools to help others live their lives while still being proactive about their health needs.

Any time I am presented with an opportunity that is exciting and can draw from different aspects of life to put it in motion, i.e., raising money, creating a white glove user experience, utilizing relationships to create something customers will love – is exciting. You get to see the process come to fruition and build it from the ground up. That’s what got me up every day during the initial days of Boomerang.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be turning nothing into something. When I started Boomerang, I had no idea what I was doing in terms of the medical industry, as I came from the TV entertainment space. I applied aspects from my previous business of building an entertainment studio to create a blueprint of how to make this type of medical business work. The accomplishment of building Boomerang from the ground up and identifying the right people to support it as it grows has been rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Rejection and not having all plans come to fruition is the hardest part of creating a business. Having a great idea, positive energy, and excitement around bringing your idea to life and wanting to work with big brands can be discouraging when potential partners say the dreaded phrase, “We’re going to pass.” Luckily, we have not heard this much when starting Boomerang, but throughout my career, that is certainly the hardest thing to hear when your heart and soul are in something, and others do not recognize the value and vision at first.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. My first piece of advice would be to hire people smarter than you. Everyone has a great idea, but to have the idea and know how to execute it is key. Surrounding yourself with people that will challenge you, not just yes people or someone looking to keep a job, allows for the best possible success of the business.
  2. I’d advise you to try to build the business organically from the ground up. If the company must be sold corporately, be prepared for your plans to go off course. Entrepreneurs can be more open to taking risks, whereas corporate players may lean on the side of caution and be scared to say yes to your out-of-the-box ideas.
  3. Perseverance and attitude are important to see the business plan through. You will know if it will work or not during the process, but you cannot be afraid. Find a tool that helps you combat your fears, and you will find success. The true answer to success is not being afraid.
