Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Crawford, Owner of Boise Tonic Co., located in Boise, ID, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Boise Tonic Co. is a company that serves its community with organic and clean products, everything from wellness Tonics + Tinctures, Botanical Bath + Beauty, Apothecary Goods, and Handcrafted Soap. My customers are all people who know the importance of clean ingredients and self-care. Many find me on their paths to cleaner living or as they seek products for themselves or their littles. I have the most incredible customers!
Tell us about yourself
I'm a mom of two amazing kiddos. I started this business officially three years ago, but I have been selling Firecider and Elderberry for years before that. Even further, I have always had a passion for playing with recipes for clean and simple products. I had managed high-profile businesses in NYC and Los Angeles before making my way to Boise 9 years ago. When my sister and I opened a yoga studio, I managed the business aspects for her and used it as an outlet to sell my tonics. After becoming a stay-at-home mom, I decided to use the little free time I had to start growing this passion project.
Each day I am motivated by how much I love making these products, how the feedback from customers is rave reviews on their healing journeys, how their kids love my bath bombs, how my tinctures helped this or that, or their skin has never felt better. I am motivated to share my passion for helping others feel better in their lives. I am also motivated to show my kiddos how easy it is to make a difference, even a small one, by following your dreams.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment thus far, I would say, is growing how much Boise Tonic has in a short amount of time, with two kids (4yr and 9mo) at home. I am constantly thinking of new products, which usually come from a personal need, and formulating with intention. I am so proud of this company and so humbled by the community that it serves.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things, at least for me, is time management. I want to be a great mommy and still be able to fulfill orders and meet deadlines. The hardest thing is finding the right balance for everything. I've always been hustling when it comes to working, so slowing down is often difficult for me. I know as the babies grow, there will be more time, and I will miss being so needed by them, so I need to take it as it comes and give myself grace.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Only do something you are completely passionate about. The only thing making you different from similar businesses is YOU. Your passion will shine through, but if you don't love what you're doing, others won't either.
- Be patient with yourself. Growth and success take time. Take the necessary steps and enjoy the ride. Make mistakes. Learn the lessons. Move forward.
- Research your market. Know who your target audience would be and find ways to connect with them. Social media is a wonderful tool, and if you get the right customers on board, they can help get you off the ground!
