Award-Winning Family Photographer - Bob Caddick Photography

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in Photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bob Caddick, owner of Bob Caddick Photography, located in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a portrait and family photography studio, and my clients range from families coming for large wall art products through large and small businesses ordering management headshots and editorial photography, often on-site in industrial environments

Tell us about yourself

I had always been involved with photography, but more as a hobby than a commercial entity. After a life-threatening illness and long period of hospitalisation about 15 years ago, I contacted a book publisher (at that time, I had nothing to lose!) and to my amazement, was commissioned to photograph a coffee table book about my county. This led to opening the studio and to where I am today. My studio is my happy place!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Winning Child Portrait Photographer of the Year in a national competition, but I am constantly proud of the family photography that I know will be heirlooms of the future for my clients.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Generating a regular income stream - particularly in today's climate of rapid cost of living inflation. In the past, few people owned decent equipment, and visiting a studio for a sitting was quite normal. Now, with the smartphone's technology, "everyone is a photographer"! Only when my potential clients see my finished wall art do they appreciate the difference in both style and quality of the images.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. NEVER work for free or exposure! You will only attract people who want free!
  2. Study and practice your skills every day: a classical pianist doesn't play the piano at concerts. He or she will play and practice daily for hours.
  3. Remember to take photographs for yourself and the joy of creating!
