Create & Enhance Your Outdoor Spaces - Blume Design Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Langdon, owner of Blume Design Studio LLC., located in La, Mesa, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a landscape design business, and we help people create outdoor spaces that expand their living area outdoors. Our services include design, contractor estimates, and project management through construction.

Tell us about yourself

When I was young, I loved rearranging my bedroom and decorating it. This was always a passion, and then I discovered landscape architecture in college and chose that as my major at the University of Massachusetts. I moved to San Diego soon after and started in landscape architecture firms designing commercial properties, then got into residential design. I realized how much I loved working with people to create spaces that reflect their life and style. Soon after that, I decided to start my own business doing residential landscape design. I believe that your daily environment has a big impact on your life and well-being. We all deserve to have spaces to enjoy and recharge. Creating that for my clients is my goal on every project!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is overcoming a lot of fear and putting myself out there to talk about my business and sell my services. It felt almost terrifying at first but has gotten much easier!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is wearing many (or all!) hats in running a business. I learned as I went about marketing, sales, and accounting. I am able to delegate some things now, but in the beginning, it was just me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn what you are good at and what you are not, and be okay with that - we all have our strengths and weaknesses!
  2. Focus on your strengths and delegate the things you don't like doing or are not good at.
  3. Have people who also have their own business and/or people who are where you want to be to talk about your ideas- sometimes people in your life will not be able to relate if they haven't done this themselves.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Follow and share your passion, and you will attract people to support you and your business!
