Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tamara Hudson, Owner of Bluebonnet Photography, located in Tacoma, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Bluebonnet Photography is a luxury portrait studio located in historic downtown Tacoma. Our services are unlike any other offered in the South Sound area. We believe that a client's momentous life events deserve to be preserved on legacy quality products that will be cherished for generations. Our approach to service, master art retouching, and our couture gown collection are what provide a truly exceptional experience for our clients.
Tell us about yourself
I am known as Seattle/Tacoma's preferred maternity & newborn portrait photographer. My dynamic, award-winning work and acclaimed style have elevated me to an internationally published photographer. My unique style and service-focused approach have distinguished me as the favorite choice for clients who want exceptional images and quality products.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
A huge role in my choice to niche down and focus on maternity photography was largely in part to personal experience. I was far too self-conscious to have maternity photos taken of myself. It's a period of time that cannot be recreated, and it's a regret that I have. I never wanted another mother to miss capturing this moment because they were too self-conscious. Our editing style and posing leave all mothers seeing themselves the way their spouses see them. Beautiful, glowing, and radiant.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a business owner can be extremely isolating. You dedicate a large amount of your time and energy to your business. It leaves less time for personal relationships and commitments.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Planning is key. Don't cut corners in the beginning with regard to your financial health and business structure. Hire the attorney and the CPA to ensure it's done correctly in the beginning.
- Don't be afraid to delegate aspects of your business in order to protect your time.
- We might not always be our own "ideal" client. Patronize small businesses in your area and see what services people provide. Supporting each other's businesses strengthens communities.
