Supporting Local Artisans - Blue Mind Gallery

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts and craft but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carmen Chamberland, owner of Blue Mind Gallery, located in Bear River, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Blue Mind Gallery sells fine art and crafts made by over 50 artists and artisans. The majority of work is done right here in Nova Scotia. The selection is vast: sterling jewelry, ceramics, glasswork, metalwork, stonework, woodwork, fiber art, painting, drawing, mixed media, books, body products, and more! Whether you are looking for a small gift or a feature piece for your home, this is a good place to find it! We are open year-round and have the privilege of serving both a regular local clientele as well as the many tourists who visit Bear River each year.

Tell us about yourself

I managed another local gallery for three years before opening Blue Mind Gallery. This experience fueled my passion for the arts and made me realize how much I wanted my own business. Bear River is already recognized as a destination for viewing exceptional artwork. We have many talented artists and artisans living and working in the village. Consequently, another venue for enjoying Nova Scotia art and craft seemed appropriate as it encouraged the creative nature of our vibrant community as well as the tourists who sought us out. Equally as important, this is a project I believed in. I wanted to create a space where people would feel uplifted, inspired, and energized by the creative works of the makers in our communities. If art brings people joy, and I can bring people art, this results in my having the privilege of helping contribute to the happiness of others. What is more motivating than that?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that my business has survived the pandemic, lol! I opened Blue Mind Gallery in June of 2018 and was just starting to gain momentum when everything was shut down in early 2020. The first few years of a business are precarious under normal circumstances. My first few years have been especially precarious (or “adventurous,” as I prefer to say). I am proud, and even more so, extremely grateful that Blue Mind Gallery is still moving forward. A huge thank you to Nova Scotia for shopping locally - especially residents of my little Village of Bear River and the surrounding communities.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You never have enough time! Everything takes longer than anticipated. You are never "caught up." You just have to learn to live with it, haha... (I'm trying).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose something you are passionate about. You will be spending a lot of time at it.
  2. Do your research - including a proper business plan. Many people underestimate expenses.
  3. Be patient.
