Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Chan, Owner of Blossoming Macarons, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I bake and sell macarons, made with local and seasonal ingredients, for those who are looking to elevate their events with delicious treats. From weddings to small gatherings, my macarons are sure to add a unique flair.

Tell us about yourself

My business initially began as a way to fund my macaron journey but truly became something greater in 2020 when Bakers Against Racism first started and raised money to fight racial injustice. These days, working to uplift marginalized communities has become an integral part of my business while simultaneously aiming to bring joy to those who experience my macarons. Developing and researching new and in-season flavours and combinations motivates me to improve my craft every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been giving back to my community with money raised from bake sales to fight for equity and justice for BIPOC communities. In 2021, we raised over $1000 to donate to important organizations that aid BIPOC communities in the Greater Toronto Area.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is remaining motivated. So often, we want to see quick and immediate results, but not everyone will have immediate and viral success. Even though you may not immediately find success like some small businesses on social media, your slow and consistent growth will come.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! Even if you think that your product/service is in a saturated market, you still have something to add!
  2. Don't quit your day job just yet! You always need a Plan B, and while taking that leap to start a business is important, it is much more important to be able to support yourself while your life is in flux.
  3. Learn how to manage your money. It's incredibly important to know how to balance the books, stay within a budget, and price goods appropriately.
