What's your business, and who are your customers?

BloomWellness.ca is in the business of injury rehabilitation & optional functioning as well as fitness training and manual therapy business consulting. With a varied educational background, I offer a variety of services under one company in order to help people live their healthiest and happiest life! When it comes to exercise programs, I can treat musculoskeletal dysfunction as well as create programs tailored to every individual. I also strive to give the very best Zen-like treatments so that my clients can completely let go and relax to let the stress melt away. My clients are all ages - busy everyday folks who make time for preventative health.

Tell us about yourself

I absolutely love anatomy and physiology. My parents were in medicine, and my Father inspired me by changing his health drastically with stress management, fitness, and nutrition. This had a profound effect on me. I believe with moderation and self-care, anyone can prevent illness and injury as well as live independently to a ripe old age. All without ever going to a gym!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Although I completed three two-year diplomas before I had my daughter, I went back to massage therapy school for an advanced practitioner program in order to be able to direct bills for clients - I did this when my little girl was two (thanks to my wonderful Mother and a supportive partner). I received an honors diploma in the program. I was really proud I was able to do this.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing time and expectations. It is hard to have time boundaries when you have wonderful clients, but over my years, I have learned it is very important to take time off each week and not work seven days straight because you will burn out. People also have rehab expectations that aren't always reasonable. Consistent practice of prescribed exercises and regular treatment is important to success. So many people don't make time for it because they don't see immediate results. I love people, and I love to help people, so when their expectations don't align with reality, it is difficult to have them feel let down. However, I do find once I explain this to them, they make the necessary changes for the most part.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Plan. Don't even begin anything until you have a sound business plan.
  2. Research. Know who you want to work with, and know what your niche needs.
  3. Don't listen to any naysayers. When I announced I was going to school for massage therapy, a family friend told me I'd go bankrupt and never amount to anything. I used his comment to make me work that much harder! Now, I'm thriving, and I love my profession!
