Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elaine McGhee, Owner of Blooming Path, located in Menifee, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help clients who experience anxiety, are in the process of grief, are in physical pain, or have creative blocks. I combine my two loves, Reiki and art, in my Reiki & Arts Exploration session. The gentle hands-on or Distance Reiki clears the body of stagnation and removes energetic blocks then we spend time making art together as a way to integrate and amplify the healing.

Tell us about yourself

After traveling the country for 2.5 years in an RV with our two kids, two dogs, and a fish, I had the freedom to explore watercolor as a meditative and healing practice. Before we set off for our travels, I was diagnosed with cancer and was desperate to find relief from my anxiety and fear. I found Reiki (or rather, it found me through my company's IT guy of all places), and I walked into the surgical suite with deep calm and confidence in my medical team. We visited 11 national parks and monuments, and I was fortunate enough to be in the energy of those sacred places and paint. Reiki became and is still today a daily practice that restores my mind and spirit. I pay it forward by volunteering at a Cancer Resource Center, giving newly diagnosed patients Reiki.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's been a dream come true to be commissioned to create the art for an upcoming Oracle Card deck! I use oracle cards in my daily ritual practice, so to be able to artistically bring my passions to life feels amazing!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

An ongoing challenge in running my own business is the "hat switching." To continually change between thinking of big ideas or posting to social media to managing finances. Bundling similar activities per day has been helpful in reducing the mind chatter.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Align with a mentor. Don't worry that this person needs to have done everything you need to do. But rather, find someone that had done a part of it and start to have those conversations.
  2. Be clear on your vision, make a 1-year plan with actionable steps, and use that as the "yes/no" meter. If you are asked to do something, but it doesn't serve the vision or align with the priorities, then it's clear you have to say no.
  3. Detach from the outcome. The gentle letting go of having to know who or how to get there is a healthy balance to #2. Envision yourself putting your ego on the front porch and trust that you have set a course for your dreams. Leave room for the magic.
