Nutritional Support for Mamas - Bloom Natural Nutrition

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angela Hollett, Founder of Bloom Natural Nutrition, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a holistic private chef and nutritionist specializing in pregnancy and postpartum. I nourish my clients each week with nutrient-dense meals to support their journey into and through motherhood.

Tell us about yourself

I was a graphic designer for over 10 years, but my priorities shifted after I had my daughter. I noticed a huge lack of support services out there for mothers, and I studied to become a nutritionist. I started off as a nutrition consultant doing one on one consults but realized that I could make a bigger impact when I combined my passion for food with my nutrition background. As a nutritionist, you can write someone the perfect plan, but if they can’t put it into practice, it doesn’t help.

I use traditional wisdom combined with evidence-based practices in a whole foods first approach to nourishing new mothers. I’m motivated by the impact I’m able to have. When women send me messages about how nourished they feel after eating my food or how much more time they have now that they don’t have to worry about cooking, it makes what I do feel worthwhile. I’m also motivated by my kids. I changed my career path because I wanted the flexibility to spend more time with them, and when I could pick up my daughter from kindergarten every day or go on an outing midweek with the kids just because, I knew I made the right choice.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Launching this business is a huge accomplishment for me. But launching our weekly Bloom Bundle, a rotating seasonal menu of nourishing foods which people can order without the commitment of a full-time service, was maybe the biggest accomplishment so far. It’s allowed me to feed even more people than I could have imagined.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

My biggest struggle is not being able to shut off my brain. Sometimes I joke that I traded in the 9-5 for the 24/7. It sounds cliche, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s allowed me the luxury of time with my kids and flexibility of time, and the power of decision-making. I can be nimble and implement a plan without the fuss of getting things signed off by anyone else and pivot if things don’t work out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it. Don’t spend too much time trying to talk yourself out of it because you never know what could happen.
  2. Trust your gut. It’s almost always right.
  3. Go with the flow. Not everything has to be a fight. If something feels like you’re going against the current, it might be time to reevaluate whether it’s the right direction.
