Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sue Ellen Carpenter, Founder of Bloom Fertility, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bloom Fertility is a unique infertility practice. We leverage our experience with infertility care and disruptive technology for embryo culture to improve access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for patients when traditional treatment is unaffordable. Our patients can be anyone who can benefit from infertility care with this mindset: women with a tubal factor or unexplained infertility, male factor infertility, lesbian couples looking for reciprocal IVF, and single women.

Tell us about yourself

I spent many years working in traditional IVF. As success rates improved, the work was very fulfilling. However, the price continued to climb. I was often heartbroken by the number of families who could have benefitted from IVF technology but could not fathom the price or the level of technology. I had the opportunity to reimagine fertility care using INVOcell technology, and I was thrilled.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My Team! I have the great privilege of working with an experienced and passionate team. At Bloom, the clinical manager, lab director, embryologist, medical assistant, and front desk associate are dedicated to our patients and provide outstanding, knowledgeable guidance every day.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping all the balls in the air for the business, the science, and the patient care. I have to discipline myself to do the things that come less naturally to me-generally on the business side.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it because it makes your heart sing.
  2. Assemble the best team you can, trust them and value their ideas and contributions every day.
  3. Identify a Board of Advisors - no matter how informal - trusted individuals who understand your mission and your style and have skill sets that you may not have, who can be called on to give you insight when your own perspective and instincts are not enough.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When I started, I spent money that I did not have on brand positioning, our name, refining our mission, and identifying our customers. I have never regretted that time or expense. The end product is an irreplaceable touchstone for us.

I was also fortunate to identify a marketing professional who understands us well. Her work on our website, our social media, advertising, and overall brand management is invaluable, and we cannot do it in-house. She is worth her weight in gold.
