Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kalin Falconer, founder of Bloom & Co., located in St. Davids, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a full-service flower shop specializing in wedding and event flowers but finding joy in offering gifts, plants, home decor, and everyday florals for all occasions.

Tell us about yourself

My educational background is in Interior Design, but after completing a Floral Design course in between semesters, I was instantly hooked. I have a very distinct left brain/right brain balance, so owning a business in a creative industry feels like the perfect fit. I love nature and working with my hands. I especially love witnessing a client's reaction to something I have created for them--particularly for an occasion as important as a wedding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have had the privilege of traveling as a wedding florist and have designed wedding flowers in Greece, France, and Seattle.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats. I think small business ownership is often glamorized, but people don't always realize that in addition to being a floral designer, I'm also the bookkeeper, janitor, inventory manager, customer service person etc. etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just do it. If you have a good idea and a bit of know-how, take the leap and figure out how to land on the way down. Maybe that sounds reckless, but for me, the fear of failure combined with the excitement of a new project is exceptionally motivating.
