What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a historic American perfumery. Our family started making fine fragrances in 1865. Our customers are intellectually curious; they enjoy the layers of stories that inspire our fragrances as well as the beauty and complexity of the perfumes themselves. We try to find that balance by blending modern notes and design with vintage elements.
Tell us about yourself
We knew that there was a perfumer in the family history, but once I did more research and found out how pioneering and successful the company was, I knew we had to revive this amazing brand. Whenever I get frustrated with the day-to-day business details, I find something to remind me of the history. For example, in the midst of putting together packaging for our newest perfume, Esprit d'Amour, I discovered a vintage bottle in an eBay listing. The thrill of those discoveries keeps me motivated.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching the first perfumes was a huge accomplishment. My career up to that point was as a lawyer working in the software industry. No product experience at all.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The ups and downs are personal.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Join industry groups to meet people because you need referrals for all types of partners and vendors.
- Start it right on day one with proper record keeping. I wrote an annual report the first year even though we had no net income. These reports give us a lot of insight and help define goals for the following year.
- Be prepared to manage the emotions and learn how to "close" your business for family and personal time.
