Warms & Relaxes Your Heart & Soul - Black Girl Candle Company

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cassandra Durham, owner and founder of Black Girl Candle Company, located in Burlington, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Black Girl Candle Company is a small online retailer specializing in exclusive candle products that capture the strength, perseverance, and tenacity of black girls and women. We strive to create products that warm your heart while relaxing your soul. Established in 2020, our mission is to provide handcrafted candles which represent the full spectrum of the black girl experience in America.

BGCC is not just another candle, it is a whole mood. Whether you need soft, subtle, sensual scents or fun, flirty aromas, Black Girl Candle Company has a scent experience waiting.

Tell us about yourself

I started making candles against the backdrop of the murder of George Floyd and the civil and racial unrest that followed. Making candles soothed my soul and allowed me to work out my own uneasiness of the times. I wanted to create something for stressed-out people who needed a moment to gather their thoughts while seeking peace and clarity. This is the reason for our existence to provide our customers with hope, peace, and clarity of thought.

We believe we've all had times when our backs were against the wall, and we felt hopeless and helpless. We invite our customers to use these moments as a launchpad to the solutions. Don't run from your feelings, but instead, lean into them. Feel what you need to feel so you can heal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest accomplishment has been watching something that only lived in my head (this candle company) become a reality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I believe what's been the hardest thing for us is not having access to capital to help us grow and expand. Since our business started during the pandemic, we are not eligible for many of the government funding programs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research the market - get to know your competitors.
  2. Be very sure of what you're selling and who you are selling it to.
  3. Realize that there are no failures in business, only experiences.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'd say business ownership is not an easy journey, but it is worth it. I love the idea of leaving a legacy for my children as well as grandchildren.
