Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Casey Spreeman, Owner of Black Diamond Consulting LLC., located in Missoula, MT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Black Diamond Consulting is a group of passionate experts focusing on delivering Environmental Health and Safety solutions to its customers. Our customers are companies that have the desire to take their safety culture to the next level. We specialize in high-hazard risk assessments, compliance auditing, and specialized training.

Tell us about yourself

My journey in the safety industry began while completing my bachelor's degree and an opportunity to work as a consultant developing a full EHSS program. My chance opportunity to work with an industry expert quickly developed into a passion for managing risk. This passion helped me make an impact in several industries as a company EHS professional. I began to see a need for skilled safety professionals in my local market (Missoula, Montana) to provide consultation services. The vision of Black Diamond Consulting is to provide a high-value consultation service without the commitment of hiring a full-time safety professional.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner to date was to take the leap and start to market myself. The decision to become a consultant was years in the making, and taking a step into the unknown was a daunting feat.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with a business owner is the pressure to always deliver. When working in operations, there is the ability to lean on colleagues and enjoy a shared outcome. Being a business owner has a huge upside as you reap the total benefit of your hard work, but the pressure to perform lies solely on the business owner's shoulders.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait! Even if you're doing a little at a time. Make a list of what you need to do, and start checking things off.
  2. Be yourself. Be genuine in all of your interactions and align yourself with the people you believe in.
  3. Don't sell yourself short. Know your worth, and constantly re-evaluate.
