Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mia Moss, owner of Black Coffee, located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Black Coffee is a community-based coffee shop on the east side of Fort Worth. We've created a third place, outside of work or home, where the community can hang out, hold meetings, study, and work while enjoying some amazing specialty drinks.

Tell us about yourself

I am from Fort Worth, and I grew up on the east side. When I graduated from high school, my first job was at a coffee shop in the airport. I was able to connect with so many people, and it made me appreciate coffee.

When I got older, my husband and I traveled and visited local shops. While home, I noticed that we had to hop on the freeway to get a local cup of coffee. I mentioned wanting a coffee shop in our neighborhood, and friends encouraged me to do it myself. I immediately took that and began creating this space.

I am motivated by so many things and people. My husband, my kids, and the community. I love showing my kids that you can do exactly what you want as long as you put in the work. I also love showing the community that it has value.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is actually opening. It takes so much to open a business, and I am proud of myself for doing just that.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Operating through COVID and figuring out how to continue through supply shortages. There's so much up and down, and you have to be able to pivot quickly. It can be tough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in your vision.
  2. Do your research, and never stop learning.
  3. Just do it! You can't fail or succeed if you don't take the leap.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Black Coffee is a place of love, a place to explore coffee in its many different forms, and a place for the community. All are welcome.
