Serving Delicious, Creative Food - Bistro 49 Southern Bites

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Khamel Brown, owner of Bistro 49 Southern Bites, located in Sutter Creek, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Executive Chef and owner of Bistro 49 Southern Bites in Sutter Creek, CA. We are a full-service restaurant serving lunch, dinner, and also catering services. Our customers come from all over, and we also have a very strong local crowd who continues to support us. The last three years have been the toughest years I have experienced. But somehow, we fought through and continue to serve our guests to the best of our capabilities.

Tell us about yourself

Cooking has always been a passion of mine, going back to the days when I visited my grandmother and worked with her in her garden. My mother was also a major influence on me and my cooking style. Honestly, what motivates me to keep going is my staff and our faithful customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say being a new restaurant that made it through the pandemic, we still have a lot of struggles to overcome as a restaurant, but we are still here.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner, honestly, at times, is a very lonely place to be. But it is also very rewarding. Setting a goal and fighting to accomplish that goal. Then when you get there and achieve that goal is a great feeling. Also, seeing people develop is a major reward, but going through the process with them can be challenging. The hardest thing I would say is letting go and allowing the people you pay to manage the business. Otherwise, you will work yourself into the hospital.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There is really only one tip I give to people:

FIND YOUR TARGET, AND NEVER GIVE UP!! People only fail when they give up. The rest of the time, you are learning.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Keep ownership and control of your business, too many partners is not always the answer. No one can really accomplish your vision for you.
