What's your business, and who are your customers?
BirthPrep Yoga™ is a 6-week prenatal yoga series online for all trimesters of pregnancy. I call the program BirthPrep Yoga™: An Empowered Birth. Each class in the program explores a theme (education), followed by a prenatal yoga class.
Best of all, students can log in to an online portal with over 35 yoga videos + bonus materials (guest speaker videos, + handouts. So they can get movement whenever they need it on top of the weekly live classes.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Hannah Day, and I specialize in teaching prenatal yoga. I had taught prenatal yoga for over 10 years and moved my classes online when the pandemic started, founding BirthPrep Yoga™ in 2020. The birth of my 2 daughters was empowering and helped kick-start a positive postpartum recovery period.
Many students have told me they were unprepared for birth and found the experience traumatic. “It's been estimated that up to 1 in 3 women who give birth may experience birth trauma” ONE IN THREE, that is a HUGE percentage of women (Pregnancy, Birth & Baby).
So many women don’t feel empowered when it comes to birth, which has a lasting effect on their postpartum recovery period and, I believe, on their confidence as mothers. When women feel empowered about birth (even as unpredictable as birth can be), they feel in charge of their bodies and their choices, and it’s a completely different experience. That is what my 6-week program does, it informs women about birth + gets them exercising and feeling strong in their bodies (both physically and mentally).
Since launching 2 years ago online, I've had such incredible feedback from the students that brings tears to my eyes to know that I've helped a student have an empowered birth experience and kick-started a positive postpartum recovery period is everything.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was moving my entire business online, learning all about technology, and bringing my classes online without compromising quality. I won a government grant and invested in my own filming equipment, top-notch microphones, computer, and storage software (because I shoot in 1080 p - my videos take up an enormous amount of space!).
In 2022, BirthPrep Yoga™ won a Recognition Award as Tech Savvy Award by Moneris at the Total Mom Show. I am so proud that I am now 100% online and can bring my offering far and wide.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about owning a business & being an entrepreneur is mom guilt. I spend a lot of evenings and weekends working, and I notice I think about work when I should be 100% present with my kids when they are telling me about their day or wanting to do something with me.
Finding a balance between work and being a mom is definitely a journey, but one that is coming more and more into balance, and what has helped me is setting clear boundaries when I work and when I play.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't worry about perfection. Just start.
- Don't be afraid of social media. Use IG stories & your grid to tell your story and connect with your audience (no one cares if your reel isn't perfect).
- Your newsletter is super important! Nurture your audience by giving them nuggets of information and sharing personal stories. Also, use interesting "subject line topics" to get your emails opened.
