Helping Women Navigate “Mid-Career Madness” - Birdsoup

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jo Hind, Co-Founder of Birdsoup, located in London, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Birdsoup, we shine a light on people transformation within organisations with the goal of making inclusion a business-critical issue. We can help interrogate problems as well as design and deliver programmes to drive change. Our customers are organisations that want to get more from their employees or have a people challenge they need to fix. We work with teams, career stages, and individuals.

Tell us about yourself

I spent over 30 years working in media, starting in TV (both agency and media owner) and moving to digital in the dot.com boom. Working in fast-paced, complex organisations taught me a lot about being adaptable, dealing with change, and bringing people along with you. I have always enjoyed the people management part of my career. After having my son, I recognised how my career stagnated and the challenges many women face. I retained as a coach, trainer & facilitator and loved the opportunity to combine those skills with my business experience. Our business started with a focus on women's careers. The challenges we identified and the insights and strategies we developed are relevant to the workplace as a whole. What motivates me is helping to make the workplace better for everyone and helping people recognise their potential.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving the pandemic as a relatively young business. We pivoted quickly to change how we worked and were able to experiment and try some new things that proved really useful, both the successes and the failures!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing when to say no to the wrong kind of work. It's counter-intuitive, especially when starting to turn down business but developing your sweet spot where you add the most value and the clients you want to work with is crucial.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be really clear on what you're strengths are, what you do best, but also where your gaps are and outsource those.
  2. Have a clear plan but make it SMART and have some flexibility. Often something will derail you.
  3. Get your pricing right, and understand the value that your business delivers.
