What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m an executive coach. My clients tend to be successful corporate men in their 40s and 50s who are finding that what has worked for them thus far is no longer working. Their careers and/or relationships are not as fulfilling as they thought they’d be.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been a self-employed professional for over 40 years. Each business and industry I’ve worked in adds to my understanding and appreciation of human nature. Together with my own personal growth and development journey that started when I was a disenfranchised teenager, these have led me to become a coach.

The coaching relationship is deeply honest and personal. It touches a place in each of us that is undernourished. It touches that place for me as well. My clients teach me. Each session reinforces my humanity as it reaffirms that of my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So many to choose from! To live when, where, and how I choose has been a freedom that has supported my own exploration in life. But I think it’s important to mention that entrepreneurship teaches ownership and resiliency, not to mention service to others.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being in business for yourself offers no safety net. Learning to be able to adapt to your market audience is imperative. Being vulnerable so as to penetrate the noise and be relatable while being empowered and confident to enable trust requires us to actualize our humanity in a deeply authentic way. Being a successful entrepreneur will require your personal development.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do the work you love, and that has meaning for you. Not something you hope will be marketable.
  2. Know your market and adapt as necessary, but never sacrifice your core reason for being.
  3. It may take time, but you will find your market, and they you, if you have a product or service of value, and you bring heart, grit, and perseverance.
