Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in human resources services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Probert, Founder of Big Sky Recruitment, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business primarily focuses on helping job seekers update their job search-related documentation as skills. As such, I help clients with resume updates, cover letter writing, and interview preparation coaching.
Tell us about yourself
I started Big Sky in 2018 when I left a corporate recruiting role in the tech sector. I wasn't sure what would come next professionally for me at that time, so I struck out on my own! As a long-time corporate recruiter, I have an excellent idea of what works and what doesn't when it comes to the job application process, and my customers value my insights in this area.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been having repeat customers - individuals who worked with me early on with Big Sky and then came back to ask me for help later on. In my opinion, this is the highest compliment a business owner can receive!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It can be difficult to maintain one's confidence as an entrepreneur. When work is slow, it can feel as though it is all your own fault when in fact, there could be many contributing factors that are beyond your control.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be honest with yourself about your strengths. Starting a business is hard enough without being confident in your skills and abilities in what you will offer to prospective clients.
- Consider how much risk you are willing to take/tolerate. Starting a business can be a slow and expensive process.
- Don't be afraid to try something new and fail. Sure, you may lose time, energy, and money, but you will also learn something valuable along the way.
