Cultivating Layers of Resilience - Big Onion Partnerships

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary Cipollone, Founder and Principal of Big Onion Partnerships, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Big Onion Partnerships is committed to making work work better for humanity. We partner with leaders, teams, and companies that are excited to build intentional workplace cultures where people feel valued, connected, and collaborate effectively. Together we may redefine what people management looks like, run a powerful team retreat, or design a plan to bring your values to life.

Tell us about yourself

What I relished about my job as a CEO was that not only did I have the power to influence our company's mission, but I also had the privilege of shaping policies and practices that could make our team members' lives better. That's what inspired me to start Big Onion Partnerships. I know it's possible to create workplaces that offer connection, belonging, and fulfillment. And I know that companies who prioritize employee well-being perform better and contribute to a world where their employees can be better partners, parents, and neighbors.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am most proud of creating opportunities for teams to connect, learn, and evolve. When my clients tell me I create a safe space where they can authentically express themselves, problem-solve, and have fun, I know I am living my values.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One facet of burnout that emerges for me is a need to separate who I am from what I do. In a society where "what do you do?" is often the first question we ask one another, I often need to remind myself that my self-worth is not defined by my productivity or someone else's definition of success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your personal values and create a business that allows you to live them.
  2. Similarly, know what gets you fired up and focus on a business that provides opportunities to learn and do things that energize you.
  3. Surround yourself with people who will be your cheerleaders, your thought partners, and accountability buddies as you navigate the ups and downs.
