What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Big Mike's Kick Ass Detailing Products. I sell ready-to-use car wash & detailing products for every vehicle cleaning need, from gear heads and detailing pros to soccer moms and weekend driveway detailers.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up around my family's truck wash equipment sales & service company in Sale Lake City; cleaning vehicles is in my DNA. When I was a kid, I would spend Saturday afternoons with my dad in the driveway detailing his bright red truck. When I was 15 years old, I started detailing cars for family members. That quickly grew into detailing for neighbors. The next summer, I started my first mobile detailing business. I got out of the detailing business back in the early 2000s, but I always thought it would be really cool to have my name on a line of high-quality car wash & detailing products, so I launched that in January of 2020. I'm motivated every day by the cool people I meet who are looking for an uncomplicated process to keep their cars looking awesome.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing my kids get involved with our business. My sons show up to the car shows with me, and my daughters work on marketing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is dealing with crippling imposter syndrome every damn day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start.
  2. Learn to pivot when needed.
  3. Do not burn any calories on the opinions of people who never have or are unwilling to step into the business owner arena.
